Message from the Director

Mamiko Nishimura, IPNU Library Director

Mamiko Nishimura, IPNU Library Director

Since April 2016, it has been my honor to serve as the director of the IPNU Library. The library plays an extremely important role for the university. In recent years, the library has been called on to provide an unprecedented level of service, such as, for example, through the provision of learning support and involvement in educational activities, as well as research support through the active dissemination of research outcomes.

Moreover, the functions that students look to the library to provide, besides lending books, include the desire for an awareness of the library as a place—a place to relax, an expansive space with study rooms where students will be able to concentrate on their own—as well as the provision of projects and information—such as by introducing recommended books, or offering borrowing rankings and usage statistics—that will stimulate the desire to read and the motivation to acquire information. While information is increasingly becoming more available as electronic media, at the same time, I believe, there is a trend toward libraries becoming a more familiar and tangible presence.

While formulating these ideas, I hope to solicit opinions and requests from students, graduate students, as well as faculty and staff, and to ask their cooperation in examining and discussing new initiatives. Since I hope for our library to become even more accessible in future, one that will become even easier to use and further promote the university’s mission of education, research, and community service, I look forward to working with you all.
